Future Healthcare Today curates the latest news and trends in the health IT industry. In this week’s roundup, we learn about how chatbots are revolutionizing healthcare. From outperforming a doctor at medical exams to redefining interactive healthcare, chatbots and other AI tools are changing the face of healthcare.

AI Healthcare Firm Claims Its Chatbot Can Beat Doctors at Medical Exams

Doctors at London’s Royal College of Physicians were subjected to the world’s first demonstration of an artificial intelligence (AI) robot performing a clinical test. The point of the event was to show how well the chatbot, engineered by digital Medicare startup Babylon Health, would perform at the MRCGP exam, the Royal College of General Practitioners final test for trainee doctors. In the last five years, general practitioners have averaged a 72% score at the exam, and, during the demonstration, the bot scored 82%. “Tonight’s results clearly illustrate how AI-augmented health services can reduce the burden on healthcare systems around the world,” said Dr Ali Parsa, Babylon Health’s founder and CEO, in a statement posted after the event. Top Health Chatbots That Have Redefined Interactive Healthcare

Chatbots are increasingly adopted in healthcare credit to the personalized interactive interface they offer. The chatbots or Digital Personal Assistants are increasingly deployed in healthcare to assist physicians, nurses, patients or their families. Chatbots ensure optimized organization of patient pathways, medication management and assistance in emergency situations or first aid. Chatbots ease the burden on medical professionals by offering consultation on simpler medical issues.

The upsurge in the deployment of Chatbots indicates that texting or talking to smart AI-powered devices may become the first point contact for primary care in future. Chatbots are becoming indispensable in healthcare. Read the article in Analytics Insight to find out the Top Health Chatbots that have redefined Interactive healthcare here.

IT Leaders are Revamping the EHR with AI, NLP and Voice Tools

For physicians and clinicians, electronic health record (EHR) usability and the time spent box-checking and on data entry are oft-cited sources of frustration, stress, and even physician burnout. Numerous studies have shown widespread dissatisfaction among physicians with the time spent on EHR documentation and the impact on patient interactions. A study published in the Annals of Family Medicine found that primary care physicians spend nearly two hours on EHR tasks per hour of direct patient care. To tackle the problem, some of the biggest names in technology are focusing on developing “smart” EHRs, using artificial intelligence and voice recognition technology. Read about the companies that are focusing on AI and other tools to improve EHR here.

Learning from Customer Service Chatbots will Help Improve Healthcare

By 2020, customers will manage 85% of their relationships with organizations without ever interacting with a human. They will, instead, turn to AI-enabled chatbots and messaging to address their needs. Paving the way for adoption is the fact that consumers today are used to using messaging apps, such as Facebook Messenger. In fact, more than 1 billion messages are exchanged monthly between consumers and businesses on Facebook Messenger. Add to that the facts that 52% of millennials actively use social media to resolve customer service issues and that 55% of consumers welcome customer service chatbots, and you understand why so many organizations are considering chatbots and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to meet their customers where they are today.
