Health systems invest time, money, and labor into their electronic health record (EHR) systems, leading to the temptation to leverage that investment for employee and occupational health as well. While a general purpose EHR can be adapted to fill the role of an occupational electronic health record (OEHR), attempting to use one solution for all populations restricts the ability to provide exceptional employee health services. A specialized OEHR, however, is better equipped to facilitate employee care without testing the limits of a system needed to support inpatient and ambulatory practice operations. Some of the features necessary for an OEHR include:
- Privacy & data management
- Interoperability
- Agility
- Robust reporting
- Compliance with federal and state regulations for employee health
