Kootenai Health is a comprehensive regional medical provider operating facilities in northern Idaho and the inland northwestern region of the United States with a rich history that dates back to the 1950’s. In recent years, Kootenai began experiencing cyber security challenges as end-users were downloading unwanted software that put the healthcare organization at serious risk for the loss of sensitive patient information. At the time, Kootenai had a solution in place, but without visibility into behavior analytics, it was unable to effectively protect the organization from cyber attacks.
With the IT team spending so much time responding to incidents on a daily basis, they were unable to provide cybersecurity training for employees and teach them how to handle phishing emails. The organization was on a mission to find a Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solution with visibility into user behavior. They looked at several solutions and ended up choosing Forcepoint’s web, email, and DLP solutions for their unified management and advanced reporting functions. One of the advantages of Forcepoint’s DLP solutions is that it provides insights into user behavior that automatically identify data incidents that pose the greatest risk – something that Kootenai was really looking for in a solution.
Michael Meline, Director of Data Security at Kootenai says, “As a security consultant, I used to travel and do a ton of pen testing and vulnerability assessments. The companies that had Forcepoint in place were highly successful. So, with the previous knowledge I had of Forcepoint, I was confident that it was the best choice for Kootenai.”
Now with Forcepoint’s DLP solution in place, Kootenai is experiencing a substantial return on investment. According to Meline the improvement in data security was noticeable immediately, “we went from seeing only 10% malicious activity filtered out with the previous solution to averaging about 60-80% with Forcepoint in place. Our false positive rate is less than 0.1%.”
Through the strategic application of a next-generation solution, Meline’s team has become more efficient and effective at mitigating threats and protecting patient records. By having visibility into the intention behind people’s interaction with sensitive data, as well as solution that can accurately detect threats, Kootenai Health has significantly reduced the likelihood that sensitive patient information will leave the system and fall into the hands of cyber criminals.
